Power BI Dashboard Development

Dashboards that load in under two seconds, refresh themselves overnight, and survive the person who built them leaving.

Power BI is easy to start with and easy to get wrong. Reports get built directly against source tables, DAX measures get copied between files, and eighteen months later there are ninety workspaces, nobody knows which report is current, and refreshes fail every Tuesday.

We build Power BI the way it's meant to be built: a star-schema semantic model in the middle, measures defined once, row-level security applied at the model layer, and thin reports on top. Business users get self-service without being able to break anything, and IT gets a deployment pipeline instead of files on someone's laptop.

Visual design matters too. We lay reports out around the decision being made — headline number, the trend, the breakdown, then the detail — instead of decorating a page with every chart the data allows.

Problems this solves

What we usually walk into

  • Report refreshes fail overnight and nobody notices until Monday's meeting.
  • The same measure returns different values in three different reports.
  • Every regional manager can see every other region's numbers.
  • Dashboards take twenty seconds to load, so people export to Excel instead.

Implementation process

How the engagement runs

  1. 01

    Requirements and wireframes

We agree on the questions each page answers and sketch the layout before touching data.

  2. 02

    Semantic model design

Star schema, conformed dimensions, a proper date table, and measures written once in DAX.

  3. 03

    Report build

Pages built to a design system — consistent typography, colour meaning, and drill paths.

  4. 04

    Security and performance tuning

Row-level security roles, aggregation tables, and query plans reviewed until pages load fast.

  5. 05

    Deployment and handover

Workspace structure, deployment pipeline, refresh monitoring, and training for your internal owners.

Illustrative example

How a power bi dashboard development engagement typically plays out

Anonymised scenario · not a verified client record

Multi-site dental group, 9 practices

Challenge

Each practice manager built their own production spreadsheet on Friday afternoons. Consolidating them took the operations director eight hours a week and the numbers still didn't tie to the practice management system.

Solution

We modelled the practice management database into a Power BI semantic model, wrote production, case-acceptance, and chair-utilization measures once, and published a mobile-friendly dashboard with row-level security so each manager sees their own site plus the group benchmark.

Result

Manual reporting time fell from eight hours a week to roughly twenty minutes of review, and managers now see yesterday's production before their morning huddle.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

Do you work in Power BI Premium, Pro, or Fabric?
All three. We size the recommendation to your user count and refresh needs rather than defaulting to the largest SKU.
Can our team maintain the reports afterwards?
Yes — that's the point of a shared semantic model. We hand over documentation and train your owners as part of every build.
How fast should a dashboard load?
Under two seconds on the first page for a typical model. If we can't hit that, we introduce aggregations or a warehouse layer.
Can you fix an existing Power BI environment instead of starting over?
Frequently. A remediation engagement consolidates measures, rebuilds the model, and keeps the report visuals users already know.
