Microsoft Fabric is Microsoft's attempt to put the whole analytics stack — lakehouse, warehouse, pipelines, Power BI — under a single capacity-based pricing umbrella. Snowflake is a warehouse that does one thing extremely well and integrates with whatever else you run. The decision usually comes down to how committed you already are to the Microsoft ecosystem, and how much you value a single vendor's roadmap versus keeping your data platform portable across clouds.

Capacity pricing vs consumption pricing

Fabric's F SKU capacity is shared across every workload in the tenant — Power BI refreshes, data pipelines, lakehouse queries all draw from the same pool, which can make cost predictable if you're already paying for Premium capacity, but murky when one workload starves another during a busy month. Snowflake's per-second billing is transparent line by line, but requires discipline (auto-suspend, sized-right warehouses, resource monitors) to avoid a surprise invoice. Neither is objectively cheaper; it depends on whether your workloads are steady or bursty and whether you're already inside the Microsoft licensing ecosystem.
